Diabetes mellitus is a chronic condition, too much of glucose in the blood. Glucose is vital for the health, and is an important source of energy for the cells that make up your muscles and tissues. Brain’s main source of fuel is Glucose. Energy is needed for the bodies to do everything. Glucose comes from the food eaten. The food eaten that contain carbohydrates, the body breaks it down into glucose. The amount of glucose in the bloodstream is referred as ‘blood glucose level’ or BGL. Diabetes can be managed, if not, can be serious. High glucose levels in the blood, can damage the body’s blood vessels and nerves, leading to long time health complications such as heart, kidney and eye disease, and nerve damage in the feet. An increase in BGL, stimulates the release of a hormone called insulin from Pancreas. Insulin acts like a key to ‘unlock’ the ‘doors’ of the body’s cells, allowing glucose into those cells so that it can be used for energy. If a person with diabetes has good control of blood glucose, blood pressure and cholesterol and do not smoke, the risk of complications will be much lower. As a registered member of healthcare team, and as a Credentialed Diabetes Educator Mary can help her client to manage your diabetes.
